King's Warriors win fourth straight

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Southern West Virginia King's Warriors continued to roll Saturday night with a 3-0 shutout victory over the River City Rovers (3-7-3 for 12 points) in Louisville, Kentucky.  Southern West Virginia broke a 0-0 halftime deadlock with three second-half goals by Jeremy Payne, Morgan Copeland and Jorge Mackenna. King's Warriors' goalie Alex Guyer won his fourth straight game and earned his second shutout of the season to improve his record to 4-1-0.

Most importantly Southern West Virginia (6-4-2 for 20 points) kept its playoff hopes alive, and will finish the regular season with two home games at the East River Soccer Complex in Bluefield where it is undefeated this season at 4-0-1. The fate of the King's Warriors playoff hopes is in their own hands now. A pair of home wins against the Carolina Dynamo and West Virginia Chaos will allow Southern West Virginia to capture the PDL's South Atlantic Division title and send them to the PDL playoffs.

"The team has been producing results lately and we are really striving to finish the season strong," said King's Warriors' defender Harry Sherwood. "Tonight our defense laid the foundation for our midfielders to build from. We possessed well in the first half but didn't move the ball quick enough. At halftime we decided to give each other everything we had. Persistence in our pursuit paid off and we got the goals needed to win the game. We talked about getting a clean sheet and we went out and achieved it."

The King's Warriors will host the Carolina Dynamo this Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. at the East River Soccer Complex. The winner of this game will keep its' playoff hopes alive while the loser will be eliminated.

A tie would still keep the King's Warriors playoff hopes alive but would eliminate the Dynamo. On Saturday, July 19 Southern West Virginia will close out the regular season at home against the West Virginia Chaos at 7:00 p.m., with the possibility of the winner securing the South Atlantic Division Championship.
