Prep basketball playoff season arrives

BLUEFIELD — It is time for playoff basketball in Virginia.

With the regular season over, postseason tournament play begins tonight for the Southwest, Mountain Empire and Black Diamond districts.

Grayson County claimed both of the MED regular season titles, and earned an automatic berth in the Region C tournaments slated for next week.

Carroll County captured the SWD boys crown, but the girls title will be determined tonight when Richlands plays Carroll County in a special playoff game at Marion High School. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

Richlands is trying to end a long run of SWD dominance by the Cavaliers in the final year of district play. The winner will not only earn a berth in Region IV action the following week, but would also be able to host the district tourney championship game later this week.

Honaker won the BDD boys title, while the girls crown went to Grundy. As for the actual tournament, which will be held at Clinchco Elementary School, the seedings and pairings had to be sorted out Sunday due to several ties.

Four boys teams finished with 3-7 records, while two girls squads were 6-4 and two others were 1-9.

Regional play will be held next week. Region C boys action will be held at Graham Middle School.

Mountain Empire District Boys

Site: Fort Chiswell High School, semifinals (Thursday), championship (Friday).

Top seed: Grayson County (17-5). The Blue Devils have lost to four teams with a combined record of 73-15. One of those losses came in a tournament to Graham. Grayson was 10-0 in the MED.

Second seed: Graham (15-7). Graham defeated Grayson County in a tournament at Fort Chiswell, but lost twice in the regular season, including a heart-breaking 57-56 loss two week ago. The G-Men have lost seven games to five schools with a mark of 77-27.

Tonight’s quarterfinals: Galax (4-15) at Bland County (12-9). These teams split decisions this season, with both teams winning on the other’s home court. The winner plays Grayson County on Thursday. The Bears have had their seasons ended the last two years by Galax, and the Maroon Tide went on to win a pair of Division 1 state titles.

Narrows (8-14) at Fort Chiswell (12-10). The winner plays Graham on Thursday. The Green Wave went winless in the MED this season, losing to the Pioneers by 19 and 52 points.

Mountain Empire District Girls

Site: Fort Chiswell High School, semifinals (Wednesday), championship (Friday).

Top seed: Grayson County (17-5). The Blue Devils had won 10 straight before losing to Graham on Friday. The Pioneers’ other MED loss came to Fort Chiswell.

Second seed: Graham (13-8). Graham finished tied for second with Galax in the MED, but won the tiebreaker to earn a first round bye. The G-Girls have won four in a row since a nine-point loss to Grayson County.

Tonight’s quarterfinals: Bland County (3-18) at Galax (13-8). It has been a long season for the Lady Bears, whose lone district win came against Narrows. They have lost twice to the Maroon Tide by 14 and 13 points. The winner of tonight’s game plays Graham on Wednesday.

Narrows (4-17) at Fort Chiswell (14-8). Narrows’ lone MED win came against the Bears. The Green Wave have lost to the Pioneers by 32 and 29 points. The winner tonight plays Grayson County on Wednesday.

Southwest District Boys

Site: Carroll County High School; semifinals (Wednesday, at higher-seeded teams), championship (Friday).

Top seed: Carroll County (21-1). The Cavaliers are the prohibitive favorites, having finished 8-0 in the SWD, winning by an average of 26.7 points a game. The Cavs’ lone loss was to the Virginia Episcopal Bishops.

Tonight’s quarterfinal: Richlands (3-17) at Tazewell (7-14). The winner gets a trip to Carroll County. The Bulldogs have defeated the Blue Tornado by 28 and 22 points. Richlands lost two starters before the season started and another one soon after, and went 0-8 in the SWD.

The rest: Abingdon (16-6) and Marion (6-6) will meet on Wednesday, with the winner facing Carroll County, unless the Bulldogs or Blue Tornado can put off a monumental upset. Marion lost by three earlier this season to Carroll County, while the Falcons dropped a four-point decision to the Cavaliers.

Southwest District Girls

Site: TBD; semifinals (Thursday), championship (Saturday).

Playoff: Richlands (16-3) vs. Carroll County (13-8). Richlands ended Carroll County’s long string of dominance in volleyball a few years ago, and could do it in basketball tonight with a win. Richlands won 38-35 in Hillsville, but lost at home last week 37-35.

Tuesday’s quarterfinal: Marion (4-17) at Tazewell (12-10). The Bulldogs wound up tied for third in the SWD with Abingdon, but will be part of the play-in game. Tazewell was in first place before a four-game losing skid, but they have beaten the Hurricane by 10 and 9 points. Tuesday’s winner takes on the Richlands-Carroll County winner in a Thursday district semifinal.

The rest: Abingdon (8-14) will visit either Carroll County or Richlands in Thursday’s semifinals. The Falcons have lost twice to the Cavaliers and once to the Lady Blues.

Black Diamond District Boys

Sites: First round Tuesday at various schools; Friday (semifinals) and Saturday (championship) at Clinchco Elementary School.

Prior to Sunday, the only set teams who knew their spots in the tournament were regular season champion Honaker (19-2), who was 10-0 in the BDD, and second seed Haysi (18-2).

Twin Valley (10-11), Hurley (9-12), Council (7-13) and Grundy (3-18) all finished with 3-7 league marks.

Sixth-seeded Grundy will travel to third-seed Council, and fourth seed Hurley will host fifth seed Twin Valley.

Black Diamond District Girls

Sites: Tuesday at various schools; Thursday (semifinals) and Saturday (championship) at Clinchco Elementary School.

Sunday was also the day to sort out the BDD girls tourney. Haysi (11-9) and Twin Valley (8-12) were tied for third at 6-4, while Council (2-17) and Hurley (2-18) were both 1-9 in the league play.

Twin Valley got the third seed and will host No. 6 Hurley on Tuesday. Fourth-seeded Haysi greets fifth-place Council.

Grundy (16-5) won the regular season crown, while Honaker (9-13) finished second, winning seven of 10 games in district play.
