Tonight when Mount View hosts PikeView, special guests at the boys basketball game will be members of the 2005-06 Golden Knights boys basketball team, who made the eight-team field in Class AA at the state tournament that year.
Mount View Athletic Director Ed Evans said, “We have invited the players from that team back, as a recognition of their success and in conjunction with this being the 100th anniversary of the boys’ state basketball tournament.”
That team is the only Golden Knight boys team to date to have reached the state tourney.
Explained Coach Kenny Brown, who was head mentor of that team, “Doing this is a way to honor their achievement … . I’m looking to just get the guys back and let them know they haven’t been forgotten and we appreciate what they accomplished.”
The 2005-06 team had a 14-6 record, but fell in the state quarter-finals to the defending Class AA state champion Logan Wildcats. Assisting Brown with that club were Randall Wright and Nate Smith.
Brown continued, “We have seven (players) who have already committed to being here.”
The team will be recognized in a halftime ceremony tonight.
Evans, Brown and current View head coach Gary Brown are hoping for a big turnout of fans to welcome that team back.
