WELCH — Quickness and teamwork highlighted a 76-22 Mount View girls’ basketball victory over the visiting Liberty Raleigh Lady Raiders Monday night at the Castle.

Quick hands by the Lady Knights in their man-to-man defense led to a bevy of first half layups and a 34-11 lead at the break.

Liberty had trouble making the initial pass from the point to either wing that would have started offensive sets. The trouble came in the form of steal-after-steal by the quicker Lady Knights.

A 10-0 View start swelled to 19-2 at the inaugural chapter’s conclusion. All five starters scored in the initial eight minutes, with Jordan Younger’s six points leading the way. Shamecca Perkins and Gezelle Brown added four each and Ashleigh Belfiore hit a trifecta in the opener.

Brown scored eight more in the second for the lop-sided halftime lead.

Sophomore Stacy Williams, the lone double figures scorer for the Lady Raiders, had nine in the second frame.

Golden Knight head coach Yvonne Brown started five subs to open the second half, with the same favorable results defensively, as the advantage went to 54-19 entering the final quarter.

Jasmine Lash tallied nine of her 11 points in the third for the Lady View.

A 22-3 final period, led by Keisha Johnson’s 10 points, produced the victory, the seventh in nine starts for Mount View.

When the smoke had cleared, five players found twin digits scoring for the Lady Golden Knights, with three of those coming off the bench to attain that plateau.

Younger, Brown and Johnson all finished with a dozen points, while Lash contributed eleven and Tamia Joyce added 10.

Of the 11 Lady Knights who played, 10 got into the scoring column.

Remarked Coach Brown after the win, “Once again, I think they all contributed and they tried to get the ones who did not score, tried to make it available for them. That’s what you call team ball, working together, making sure that everybody has a piece of the victory.”

She continued, “I’m proud of them for being a family, being a team like they are supporting one another.”

Mount View (7-2) sank 12 of 13 free throws, including the first twelve before missing the final attempt.

The Lady Raiders (2-9) will host Oak Hill next Monday, while the View will entertain Bluefield Tuesday at the Castle.
