BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Entries are now being accepted for the 44th Pocahontas Men’s Amateur Golf Championship, which will begin play on August 9 at Fincastle On the Mountain in Bluefield, Va.
“We look forward to another great tournament,” noted Pocahontas tournament director Frank Wilkinson. “We’ve maintained the entry fee of $140, which entitles each golfer to a practice round any weekday from July 15 through August 8 and at least two competitive rounds.” The field will be pared to the low 60 scores and ties entering the final round on Sunday, August 11.
This year’s field will be greeted by a Fincastle course that has undergone some subtle changes since last year’s Pocahontas, according to Wilkinson. “The course is still challenging, but it also doesn’t demand a scratch golfer-type shot throughout the round in order to score reasonably well,” he explained.
“We are expecting another very competitive event,” Wilkinson continued. “This year’s Pocahontas should be ‘wide open’ with several golfers having a legitimate shot to win the tournament. The Senior Division has also been expanded. Last year, we lowered the age at which individuals are eligible to compete as Seniors from 55 to 50. Additionally, the Junior Division is open to all golfers age 18 and younger.”
Entrants must hold a verifiable handicap of 6.9 or less. Official entry forms are available online at www.pocahontasmensamateur.com Additional information can be obtained by contacting Wilkinson by phone (304-324-3214) or e-mail (email@example.com). Entrants should remit a check ($140 made payable to Pocahontas Men’s Amateur), along with entry form (submitted electronically or by mail) and verification of handicap to Frank Wilkinson, Tournament Director, PO Box 1559, Bluefield, WV 24701.
Prizes will be awarded to the low ten finishers in the Championship and the low five finishers in the Senior (age 50 and over) Division. Trophies will be awarded to the overall winner and runner-up, the low senior and low junior (age 18 and younger).
“We’re excited about the tournament,” Wilkinson said. “The Fincastle course is an outstanding venue and has undergone several changes to make it more challenging. We take pride in offering a well-run event for this region’s golfers and spectators.” The Pocahontas Men’s Amateur is sponsored by First Century Bank.
