Late home run foils Princeton Rays

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — An eighth-inning home run by Johnson City’s Justin Ringo gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead and the eventual win over the Princeton Rays on Monday evening at Howard Johnson Field.

The Rays broke a 20-inning scoreless streak in the sixth. Armando Araiza singled and took second on a wild pitch. Enmanuel Paulino brought him home with a two-out single to right field, tying the contest 1-1.

Paulino was 3 for 4 at bat for Princeton. The Rays had seven hits, while their hosts had five, from five different batters. The first Cardinal batter, Vaughn Bryan, doubled and tallied the initial run on a single by Ronnierd Garcia.

Princeton starter German Marquez gave up only three hits and did not walk a batter in five innings of work. Luis Cabrera (0-4) allowed the other two Cardinal hits and struck out four Cardinals in three innings, but took the loss.

Alexander Reyes started for Johnson City and recorded eight strikeouts while giving up six hits and one run. Zach Loraine (1-0) pitched one-hit ball over the final two innings and claimed his first professional win in his 12th game as a reliever.

After games with the Cardinals today and Wednesday, the Rays return home for three games with the Burlington Royals on Thursday through Saturday.
