The James Monroe Mavericks’ softball team saw its run through the Class AA state tournament come to an end with a 5-1 loss to Wayne in the championship game on Thursday afternoon.
James Monroe, which made its first appearance in the state tournament since 1997, finished a stellar season with a 23-7 record. The Mavericks, which defeated Ritchie County to advance to the finals on Thursday morning, would have had to beat Wayne twice to claim the school’s first softball championship.
