James Monroe sweeps past PikeView to win sectional title

GARDNER — The James Monroe Lady Mavericks claimed the West Virginia Class AA Region III, Section 4 championship with a pair of victories over the PikeView Lady Panthers, Wednesday evening at PVHS 3-0 and 9-5.

In the opening game Haileah Pikles led the Mavericks at the plate going 2-for-3 and Rebecca Ratcliff earned the pitching victory.

Brooke Baker and Audrey Higgins were each 1-for-2 for the Lady Panthers as Haleigh Compton suffered the loss.

In the second game the Lady Mavericks pulled away, scoring four runs in the fifth inning. Bailee Jackson was 3-for-4 at the plate and Ratcliff got the pitching victory. Compton suffered the loss for PikeView. Sam Meadows and Kristen Worrell each had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Lady Panthers.

James Monroe advances to play the Region III, Section 3 champions, the winner of the River View-Mount View series.

Galax 10, Narrows 0

NARROWS, Va. — The Galax Maroon Tide surfed past the Narrows Green Wave in Mountain Empire District play Wednesday evening.

Lauren Garvey tossed a two hitter for Galax as Narrows’ only hits were a double by Tiffany Perdue and a single by Darien Nagel.

The Green Wave plays again today as they host Fort Chiswell.

WARDELL, Va. — The Abingdon Falcons held the Richlands Blue Tornado to four hits and claimed a shutout win Wednesday evening at Southwest Virginia Community College.

Ben Brown had a triple for the Blues while Zach Johnson, Chase Collins and Trent Davis each picked up singles. Davis suffered the loss while Tyler Arnold got the win.

Richlands (4-11) plays at Tazewell on Friday.
