Prep roundup: Princeton pitches, hits past Riverside

PRINCETON — Ian Southcott scattered four hits over seven innings on the mound, and Brett Wall and Will Hickman drove in runs to lead Princeton to a 2-1 win over Riverside on Saturday afternoon at Hunnicutt Field.

Princeton (8-15) scored in the fifth on an RBI double by Wall to score Aaron Ferguson, who had walked, and that was followed in the sixth when Billy Jack Varney walked, moved up and scored on a single from Hickman.

Addison Wood led Princeton with two hits. Southcott struck out four batters and walked five, while the Tigers were able to overcome two errors.

Trevor Smith drove in Riverside’s lone run in the fourth with a double. Brady Wilkinson was saddled with the loss.

Princeton will play an MSAC tournament game on Monday against an opponent to be determined today.


PikeView 10, Summers County 2

HINTON — Haleigh Compton collected two hits, scored two runs and allowed just three hits in the circle to lead the Panthers in their final regular season game.

Lyndsay Hatfield and Shelby Compton each had two hits and scored two runs. Compton struck out seven batters in the win.

PikeView (12-17) will host sectional next Tuesday, with the Panthers playing Bluefield in the opening game at 5 p.m. James Monroe will play the winner of the opener later in the evening.

The sectionals could run through Thursday.

PikeView places third in meet

SUMMERSVILLE — Jason Weitzel and Lexie O’Dell each claimed individual victories and were the high point winners during the K-MAC Invitational held on Thursday at Nicholas County High School.

Both PikeView teams finished third, with the boys collecting 83 points and the girls accumulating 68.

Weitzel scored 33 1/2 points for PikeView, winning three events, including the 3,200 meters (10.21.66, 1,600 meters (4.36.75) and 800 meters (2.06.44). Vaughn Campbell placed second in the 800 meters (2.11.73), second in the 800 meters (2.11.73) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (46.63).

Other contributors included Liam Deason, who placed in the top six in three events. PikeView also won the 4x800 meter relay, led by Campbell, Weitzel, Hunter Klein and Chris McBride.

O’Dell led the PikeView girls with first place finishes in the 400 meter run (1.01.78) and 800 meters (2.41.87), and also placed second in the 200 meters (27.94). She was also part of a second place team in the 4x200 relay.

She finished with a meet-high 30 points.

PikeView placed second in the 4x800, 4x400 and 4x200 relay.

Up next for the Panthers is the Coalfield Conference Championships on Tuesday, May 6, at Independence High School. Regionals will follow the next week in Charleston on May 15.

The state meet will be held in Charleston on May 23-24.
