Tennis: Beavers, Tigers take net gains

CHARLESTON — The girls tennis team from Bluefield High School faced off with one of their main rivals Saturday with their unbeaten record on the line, and defeated Charleston Catholic on the home courts of the Irish, 5-2.

The Beavers swept the day by beating Huntington St. Joseph 5-2 on the Schoenbaum Courts, also in Charleston. Bluefield’s No. 3 doubles team of Camilla Deeb and Brittany Holt captured an 8-0 win, after prevailing 8-2 earlier in the day at Charleston Catholic.

Bluefield (14-0) will compete on Tuesday in the Coalfield Conference tournament at Liberty High School, weather permitting.

Singles — Christian Centafoni (CC) def. Molly Lovern 8-0. Zoe Nicewander (BHS) def. Sarah Fox 8-2. Alex Lewis (BHS) def. Ragan Palmer 3-0, default. Claire Bailey (BHS) def. Rachel Gouhin 8-2.

Doubles — Centafoni-Fox (CC) def. Lovern-Nicewander 8-4. Lewis-Bailey (BHS) def. Palmer-Catherine Herlighy 8-4. Camilla Deeb-Brittany Holt (BHS) def. Rachel Mullins-Georgia Payne 8-2.

Singles — Lovern (BHS) def. Taranfe Karimpour 8-3. Alyse Lewis (HSJ) def. Nicewander 9-7. Carvanfe Karimpour (HSJ) def. Alex Lewis 8-1. Bailey (BHS) def. Tatianna Schraeder 8-1.

Doubles — Lovern-Nicewander (BHS) def. Karimpour-Karimpour 8-5. Bailey-Lewis (BHS) def. Mackenzie Shepard-Schraeder 8-2. Deeb-Holt (BHS) def. Andrea Figler-Haley Runyon 8-0.


Princeton sweeps Spartans

PRINCETON — Princeton’s girls defeated Greenbrier East 6-1 on Saturday to improve to 10-1 on the season, while the boys’ team went to 7-3 this year by beating the Spartans 5-2.

Princeton’s Savannah Farmer is 9-1 in singles play after her 8-1 win on Saturday. The girls’ second doubles team of Farmer and Kelsi Browning is 10-2, and the third doubles team of Miranda Basconi and Emily Hendricks is 9-2 this year.

Among 8-0 winners Saturday were Browning in singles and the doubles duo of Alaina Blankenship and Loren King.

The boys doubles unit of Dustin Bailey and Ryan Dunn, which recorded an 8-1 win, is 10-1 this season.

Princeton is scheduled to host Riverside on Monday and play at Woodrow Wilson on Tuesday.
