Raiders find View better against Knights

WELCH — The River View Lady Raiders proved there is nothing like a good start, as the initial five batters in the top of the first recorded four hits and drew a walk to help the visitors take a 4-0 lead en route to an 11-2 softball victory over Mount View on Thursday afternoon.

River View, now 5-8, used a pair of walks, two errors, a passed ball and a single in the third to stretch the advantage to 10-0 before the Lady Knights pushed across two runs in the bottom of that frame.

“I thought our pitcher (sophomore Rebekah Christian) did an excellent job,” remarked Lady Raider assistant coach Bobby Barker.

Christian scattered three hits over the four inning contest and allowed only one earned run.

He continued, “Our defense did a good job behind her (Christian).”

Barker singled out the play of leftfielder Destenie Clevenger and centerfielder Kiersten Dority in the win.

Clevenger started the contest with a single, followed by third baseman Ellamae Johnson walking. Sophomore Summer Bailey plated Clevenger and catcher Katie Dobbs drove Johnson and Bailey home with a double to center before scoring herself on a Kayla Coleman single down the third base line.

Dobbs and pinch hitter Lindsey Meade opened the third, reaching on back-to-back errors and Dority walked.  Dobbs scored on the three base error Meade reached on and both Meade and Dority scored on wild pitches.

Second baseman Faith Poore walked and Christian fanned, but reached first on a passed ball, and both came home on Clevenger’s single down the rightfield line.

Clevenger swiped home for the sixth run of the third.

Amber Dash reached first on an error in the bottom of the third and Heather Tolnay singled to put runners at first and second.

Rebekah Snow’s fielder’s choice scored Dash and Brittany Fox’s bases loaded walk plated Tolnay.

Dobbs, who recorded the aforementioned double, reached base the next two trips on errors, including a two base one to start the fourth.

She stole third and scampered home on a wild pitch to pen the final 11-2.

Mount View head coach Todd McCoy said, “We have not played well for about two weeks.”

The Lady Knights fall to 3-6 with the setback.

Both teams are idle until after Spring break, with the Lady Raiders entertaining Grundy, VA, on Monday, April 28, and Mount View hosting Mingo Central the next day.
