GRUNDY, Va. —
A run here and a run there was all Haysi pitching needed. Gentry Shreve and Hunter Sutherland combined on a four-hit shutout as the Tigers picked up a 4-0 Black Diamond District win over Grundy Wednesday evening at Enoch's Branch park.
Haysi (6-1) stranded 10 runners, but pushed a single run across in four different innings, starting in the first. Sutherland doubled and scored on a single by Tristan Yates in the top half of the inning. In the third Yates walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch
and eventually scored on an RBI grounder to short off the bat of Shreve.
The Tigers added unearned runs off losing pitcher Charles McCoy in the fifth and sixth, loading the bases the fifth inning.
Jordan McCoy doubled with one out in Grundy's half of the first inning and was stranded on base. Ethan Cooper and Dylan Wolford led off the second with singles and were also stranded.
"We got 'em on, we just couldn't get 'em in," Grundy coach Scotty Bostic said. "We left a lot of runners stranded, we just couldn't get timely hits when we got runners on.
"Bub (McCoy) pitched a pretty good ball game. We booted it behind him a couple of times. It should have been closer than it was. We just got to keep trying to get better at it."
McCoy scattered seven hits and struck out eight. Shreve allowed just one hit and fanned six in five innings of relief to get the win.
Yates reached base all four times up and scored three runs. Sutherland and Drake Howell, who drove in a run in the sixth, each had two hits.
Grundy (2-7) had a runner thrown at the plate with two outs in the sixth.
