Goodman to run cross country and track for Mountain Lions

BLAND,Va. — Bland County senior Josh Goodman recently signed a letter of intent to run cross country and long distance races on the track for Concord University.

Goodman, who was an All-Group A and All-Region C honoree in each of the last two years in cross country, won the Mountain Empire District championship last season with a meet record time of 16:00. He finished second in 2011.

Goodman also won the Star City Half Marathon in Roanoke last year. He also holds the Bland County record for a 5K with a time of 15:59.

“Josh began running on the cross country team in eighth grade and gradually improved his times and level of competition,” wrote Bland County cross country coach Brian Porter, in an email. “He and Zach Otey have been great friends and training partners since then.”

Goodman will run for Mike Cox at Concord. Cox began coaching track at Concord during Porter’s senior year at the school in 2000, and has been there ever since.

He was an All-American at Virginia Tech, and continues to compete in Olympic and qualifying events.

“Josh is really looking forward to running for Coach Micheal Cox and the very successful Concord University Mountain Lions program,” Porter wrote.

Goodman, who is the son of Brian and Jennifer Goodman of Bland, plan to major in physical therapy.

Efforts to reach Goodman have been unsuccessful.
