The Bluefield Beavers football team will play Robert C. Byrd High School this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the state Class AA quarterfinals in Clarksburg.
The Beavers (9-2), ranked fifth in the playoffs, disposed of Roane County High School 63-27 last Fri-day night in the playoffs’ first round, while the fourth-ranked Eagles of R.C. Byrd (10-1) defeated Braxton County 27-21 on Saturday night.
The Eagles’ only loss came on Sept. 14, 35-21 at Bridgeport. Byrd was one of two Class AA teams to finish the season with just one loss.
Byrd scored an average of 43.5 points per game and gave up 11 points on average in the regular season. In six of their 10 games, they allowed seven points or fewer, including three shutouts. They beat Grafton 73-20 the week after their lone loss.
Bluefield scored 49 points or more in all of its nine victories this season. The Beavers averaged 49.5 points per game and surrendered an average of 27.8 points.
The home team for West Virginia prep football playoff games is the higher-ranked team. The lower-ranked team gets to choose whether to play on Friday or Saturday, and to select the starting time.
The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) released the schedule of dates and times on Sunday.
