Prep roundup: Kiser leads Honaker past Blues

WARDELL — Austin Kiser got the Honaker Tigers rolling on Friday evening and sent the Richlands Blue Tornado to a season-opening 4-0 defeat.

Kiser struck out 13 batters and gave up two hits, both singles, in a complete-game effort on the field at Southwest Virginia Community College. He also led the Tigers with two singles, both of which carried to the fence. Honaker also benefitted from four Richlands errors.

Jonathan Cochran and Zach Yates got Richlands’ hits. Ben Brown was the starter for the Blues, followed in the fourth by Andy Guerriero and in the final inning by Wes Mays.

Richlands is scheduled to play Sullivan East Wednesday at home, and at Bluefield on Thursday.

LINDSIDE — Independence pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts to take a road win in Monroe County Friday.

The Mavericks’ five hits were spread among five players with one hit each. Cory Lilly and Reed McNeer each had doubles for James Monroe (1-1).

Caleb Brown drove in the Mavs’ run and also threw the first three innings, giving up two earned runs. McNeer pitched the other four innings and allowed one run.

The Patriots’ Tanner Muovich struck out eight Mavericks in five innings and took the win. Wyatt Atkins batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Jeremy McGinnis was 2 for 3.

The Mavericks are scheduled to play Monday at Giles and Wednesday at Greenbrier East and Independence is slated to host Summers County on Monday.

River View 2

MONTCALM — Hannah Johnson scattered seven hits in the circle and added two hits and two runs batted in for the Generals against the Raiders.

Alexis Mabe, Alexis Hatfield and Molly Jenkins had two hits each for Montcalm, whle Katilyn Simpson had a two-run pinch-hit single.

River View was paced by Phyllis Waldron with two hits.

Montcalm (2-2) will visit Cross Lanes Christian today.
