Caleb Brown struck out 19 batters and allowed one hit on Friday afternoon at James Monroe High School, boosting the Mavericks to a 5-0 shutout of the Mount View Golden Knights.
In a complete-game win, the junior allowed one walk and one hit in facing 21 batters.
Mavericks coach John Mustain said, “He pitched really well. His pitch count got a little higher than I wanted, but he was feeling fine. ... I told him, go ahead and stay with your fastball.”
It was the first game of the year for both teams.
Ryan Wickline batted 2 for 4 for James Monroe; Ryan Page was 3 for 4 and Reed McNeer was 2 for 3. Mount View’s single hit was picked up by J. Cochran. Bryan Villanueva started on the mound for the Knights, relieved by Maurice Brown in the sixth inning.
James Monroe is scheduled to play Ft. Chiswell at home on Monday. Mount View is scheduled to play at Van on Tuesday.

Baseball: Giles 11, Graham 10
PEARISBURG, Va. — Hunter Epperley drove in the tiebreaking and game-winning runs with a single in the bottom of the seventh as the Giles Spartans came back to beat the G-Men.
Graham, in its first game of the year, got a grand slam from McKinley Webb to drive in four of the G-Men’s eight runs in the fourth inning, taking a temporary 10-4 lead. But Graham did not score again.
Jacob Coffey batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Graham, and Webb was 1 for 4 with his four RBIs. For the Spartans, Epperley was 3 for 5 with three RBIs.
Graham (0-1) is scheduled to host Bluefield on Tuesday.

BLUEFIELD — The Graham girls tennis team got their season off to a rousing start on a sunny Friday with a 9-0 win over Giles High on the courts at Bluefield City Park.
Haley Sheets, Rebecca Day, Misbah Muzaffer, Mykenzie Roach and Nicole Gabe all took 8-0 singles wins. At No. 1 singles, Caitlin Williams took an 8-2 win. Two of the three doubles matches were also 8-0 shutouts by Graham.
The two schools will play again on Thursday at Giles. The G-Girls will hold a three-team scrimmage with Blacksburg and Christiansburg high schools on Saturday, March 23.
