Third quarter run sends Wave to victory

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

GRUNDY, Va. — Grundy pushed a tired East Ridge team in a decisive third-quarter spurt and it paid off.

The Lady Wave stopped their Kentucky neighbors, 58-50, Tuesday night.

Two 8-0 runs and pressure defense helped Grundy extend a 20-18 halftime lead to 41-22 after a stickback by Morgan Hall in between 3-pointers from Krystal Cantrell and Loni Webb by the 1:22 mark of the third period.

“We knew East Ridge would have lazy legs, it was their fourth game in five nights,” Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. “We wanted to jump the ball and play up-tempo and the girls bought into it.”

Hall finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds and Savannah Charles hit four 3-pointers and added 17 points for Grundy (7-1). The Lady Wave also forced 21 turnovers, including five in the first 1:44 of the third quarter and 15 overall in the second half.

Cantrell added 11 points and four assists and Webb scored nine points. Charles had four steals, while Hall, Webb and Emily Lane each added three.

“Our defense was the key,” added Plymal. “That and we started to convert on their man defense.

“We know Savannah and Loni can hit from outside. What we need is for Emily Lane to come in and play good defense and for Krystal Cantrell to take the ball to the hole and that’s what they did.”

Paige Potter scored 11 points to lead East Ridge, which got no closer than the final margin after Grundy’s key third-quarter run. Alyssa Fraley added 10 points.
