Hoops action heats up, weather permitting

BLUEFIELD — The final days of January should provide quality basketball games featuring area teams — if Mother Nature cooperates.

A top-five matchup in Class AA awaits tonight in Beckley when the Bluefield Beavers (8-1), holding down the No. 2 spot in the AP rankings, takes on West-side (7-2), tied for fifth, in the Big Atlantic Classic tournament at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Tipoff for that tilt, the fourth of five games on Monday, is set for 7:25 p.m.

In Tuesday’s tournament action, the No. 3 team, Wyoming East (8-1) takes on Mount View (2-6) at 7:25 p.m. The Golden Knights have won two straight, against Van and James Monroe; the Warriors are coming off a 112-53 rout of Independence last Friday.

The winners of those two games will play Saturday at 2 p.m. in the same venue for the Class AA boys tournament championship. The losers from the opening round are scheduled to play in a consolation game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The middle school boys tournament bracket includes Bluefield Middle School playing Beckley-Stratton today at 1:15 p.m.

On Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., the winner of Monday’s middle school game will take on Park Middle School of Beckley. The survivor from that game reaches the middle school boys championship contest on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

The loser of Monday’s game is slotted for a 3:15 game with either Eastern Greenbrier or Independence.

Monday’s varsity basketball schedule showcases six boys games and five girls games. The No. 8 team in Class AA, PikeView (9-3) is scheduled to host Wyoming East (8-4).

The Graham G-Girls (9-6) are at home to play Giles, while the G-Men (10-5) travel to Pearisburg to play the Giles boys.

On the college level, the Bluefield State women will heat up the Ned Shott Gym at BSC today to play Salem International at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Blues (7-9) have won all three of their January games.

The Big Blues (5-11) are also in action at Davis & Elkins College (9-8) this evening, making up a game that was postponed by snow last week. The BSC men begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday, playing Pfeiffer University.

Concord returns to action Thursday, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan in Athens. The women’s game starts at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game following that contest.

All games are dependent on weather conditions.
