Mustangs eke out win over Bland County Bears

ROCKY GAP, Va. — The Bland County Bears took a 49-46 lead into the final period on Monday night at the Rocky Gap High School gym, only to have the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs perform down the stretch and take a 65-62 win.

Bland County (2-9) was plagued by 10 second-half turnovers and went 4 for 12 shooting free throws in the fourth quarter.

Still, Kalub Lambert’s 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining brought the scoring gap down to three points, but the Mustangs controlled the ball until the horn sounded.

Mason Christian scored more than half of the Bears’ points, with 24 for the evening. Jonathan Goins was Bland County’s leading rebounder, with nine boards.

Eastern Montgomery (5-8) put three players into double-figure scoring, led by J.T. Shrader with 16 points. The two teams combined for 17 made 3-pointers.

The Bears play Wednesday at Rural Retreat, weather permitting.
