Blue night at Bowen

Bluefield sends huge crowd home happy with win and fireworks

BLUEFIELD — Santiago Nessy clubbed a two-run home run and Eric Arce had two hits, drove in a run and scored another run to lead the Bluefield Blue Jays to a 4-3 Appalachian League win over the Danville Braves on Fireworks Night in front of an impressive audience of 2,296 at Bowen Field on Wednesday.

Bluefield took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Arce singled and scored on the Nessy home run. Danville answered with a run in the second, but didn’t score again until two runs crossed in the eighth.

The Blue Jays added a run in the fifth on a double from Dwight Smith Jr. and an RBI single from Arce. Nico Taylor doubled in the seventh and scored what proved to be the winning run on a single from Smith.

Tucker Jensen, the grandson of 1959 American MVP Jackie Jensen, relieved Daniel Norris in the fourth and earned the win. Brandon Dorsett, whose father, Brian Dorsett, played in the major leagues, also worked two innings, with Colby Broussand picking up his second save.

Norris struck out seven, walked our and allowed a home run in 3 1/3 innings on the mound. Smith, Arce and Christian Lopes had two hits each for the Blue Jays. Seth Conner came off the bench to double, giving him eight hits in his last 10 plate appearances.

Felix Marte led the Braves — which finished with four hits — with a home run, single and three runs batted in. Mauricio Cabrera took the loss.

Bluefield (7-8) will host Danville (10-6) tonight at 7:05 p.m.
