Tazewell alumnus pitches Liberty to NCAA victory

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Tazewell High School alumnus Trey Lambert allowed one run on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings on Sunday, helping the Liberty Flames defeat the Clemson Tigers 3-1 in an NCAA regional elimination game.

Lambert (8-3) struck out one and walked two batters. However, the key for the right-hander was that he stranded two Tigers at third base and three at second base.

Liberty got four hits by Bryan Aanderud, who drove in two runs.

Liberty (36-28) advanced to the regional final round for the first time. The Flames’ game against regional host South Carolina was still in progress late Sunday night.

In the double-elimination format, Liberty needed to defeat the Gamecocks twice in order to claim the regional title.

Clemson (40-22) took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the fourth. Steve Duggar led off with a double and scored on a single back through the middle by Garrett Boulware. Liberty scored twice in their half of the fourth, with Aanderud driving the runs in, and crafted a 3-1 edge in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Trey Wimmer.

Meanwhile, Lambert kept Clemson at bay, as the Tigers were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position through the first six innings.

In the eighth, Clemson moved two runners into scoring position with two outs, but came away empty.

Hits in the contest were even at 8-8 between the two teams. Boulware had three hits to pace Clemson.
