How did it all come together for the James Monroe Mavericks on Friday night?
Was it homecoming magic? A spirited afternoon pep rally? The “jet sweep” play? The suspension of five players off the opposition's roster? A nearly-full moon?
Whatever the underlying reason, the Mavericks rolled to a 52-0 lead in the first half and cruised past the Mount View Golden Knights 52-22 at H.E. Comer Jr. Sports Complex.
Undersized senior halfback Brian Young scored three times in the first 13 minutes of play in his final homecoming game for James Monroe (2-5), twice after Mount View (1-6) lost first-quarter fumbles, and the Mavericks were on a roll.
“Sometimes when you get some quick scores like that, it kind of takes the wind out of their sails,” said James Monroe head coach John Mustain.
Young said, “We finally got it together. As soon as the game started, the offense opened up, just like we knew we could. … That's the most excited I've seen this team since I've been in high school.”
“From what we'd seen on film (of Mount View), we were pretty worried, honestly,” Mustain said.
Mount View head coach Todd McCoy said, “We were short five players. They were suspended. That took out basically our whole defensive line. I don't want to make excuses, that probably wouldn't have changed things, but we probably could have kept it closer.”
He said about the home team's early lead, “When you've got all these young players and you get down like that, it's hard to keep your head up, but I'm proud of how they hung in there.”
“Their line handled our line … and we weren't ready for that jet sweep.”
“I think, athlete for athlete – if we had had those five guys, I think we had better athletes.”
He said the suspended players, who included rushing leader LaQuell Martin and middle linebacker Marlin Marrs, will be eligible to play again next week.
Before the first quarter was out, James Monroe sophomore lineman Parker King had run 39 yards for a touchdown with a punt that teammate Matt Elmore had blocked, and Jeffery Lewis had notched a 14-yard scoring run on the next series.
A recent addition to the Mavericks' roster, Logan Hunnicutt, burst out of a scrum at the line of scrimmage and didn't stop until he was in the end zone 59 yards later. He added the two-point conversion run for the 52-0 lead.
At that point, Mustain sent substitutes onto the field, and Mount View got a quick score from Andrew Hazzard from 66 yards out. He added a 29-yard run for the only touchdown of the third quarter. Channing Vineyard closed out the scoring in the fourth on the receiving end of a pretty pass from freshman quarterback Steven Brown, which went for 58 yards.
McCoy said of Brown, “He threw some nice balls. … He's just green. He'll come around.”
Young gained 97 yards for James Monroe on just seven carries.
Mustain said, “He's not that big a kid. In fact, we worried a little bit about putting him in there. But he's a hard-nosed runner, he's got a little bit of speed – he runs track and does a good job – and he's a joy to be around.”
The coach mentioned the afternoon pep rally. “I like seeing the kids get excited,” he said. “That's a lot of what this game is about.”
Young agreed that it helped the team. “I feel the school lately hasn't had the kind of spirit. … We felt the support tonight. That helped out so much,” he said.
“We've got three more games. We've got to keep the ball rolling, and keep the wins coming.”
Hunnicut needed four runs to chalk up 83 yards. Reserve quarterback Evan Beasley worked hard for 91 yards rushing. Josh Dransfield had catches of 19 and 37 yards. McNeer was 4 for 5 for 69 aerial yards.
Hazzard led the Mount View ground game with 152 yards. Brown was 5 for 9 passing for 73 yards. Vineyard caught four of them for 70 yards.
