Blue Tornado blows away Pioneer spikers

RICHLANDS, Va. — It was “Volley for the Cure” night at Richlands High School. The Lady Blues made it a nice night with a four-set win over Lebanon in Southwest District volleyball action. After the first set it appeared it might be a long night for the Lady Blues but they came racing back to win the next three. Richlands won 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-15.

“We had a great first set,” Lebanon coach Tiffany Castle said. “The girls had the momentum, they jelled as a team and then we just lost the momentum and we couldn’t get it back.”

The Lady Pioneers had no answer for Richlands on the frontline. A balance attack was led by Sarah Compton (10 kills, four blocks), Mac Cordill (eight kills), Hannah Alley (seven kills), Chole Jackson (seven kills) and Kelsey Berry (five kills).

“We were a little flat the first game and couldn’t get into any rhythm,” said Richlands coach Ronnie Sparks. “We came along the next three games and played a lot better. We really started hitting the ball better.

“Once we get the momentum we’re kind of tough to handle. Once they get up and stay positive, they are hard to beat.”

Setter Olivia Harmon did a great job of directing the offense. Harmon distributed 37 assists and also was solid on the service line with 11 points.

“Olivia is just doing a great job for us as a setter,” Sparks said.

“Being a freshman, she has exceeded my expectations. She’s a good all-around player. Olivia gets a few kills, serves the ball well and gets the girls good balls to hit.”

The defense was also strong. When Lebanon put the ball down, they had trouble getting it on the floor. Cordill led the way with 25 digs. Libero Nadia Ashiq was close behind with 25 digs and Berry added 15 digs.

“Mac and Nadia are probably our top defenders,” remarked Sparks.

“They both see the court really well and pass the ball really well. They have developed during the season at reading the hitters and are good at passing, so we can get an attack back at the opposition.”

In addition to Harmon, Compton and Hannah Alley delivered 10 service points each. Berry totaled five aces.

Monica Parrott paced Lebanon (4-15) with nine kills. Taylor Woodlief finished with 15 assists.

Richlands will travel to Abingdon today in another SWD match.
