Beavers score 61 in rout of Gate City

BLUEFIELD — Scoring on nine of 10 possessions, Bluefield rolled to a 61-7 win over Gate City at Mitchell Stadium Friday night.

The Beavers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as fullback Corey Coppola powered into the end zone from four yards out to cap a 48-yard drive with 9:34 left in the first quarter.

After the teams exchanged punts, Bluefield set up shop at its own 31. Four plays later, D.J. Stewart sprinted into the end zone from 42 yards away and the Beavers let 14-0 after one period.

Bluefield put together its second straight four-play, 69-yard drive on its next possession when Steward out-ran the Blue Devils’ defense on a 33-yard touchdown scamper.

After a Gate City 3-and-out, D.J. Edwards broke a couple of tackles and raced 25 yards for a Beaver score with 8:36 left in the half.

Following a Dakoda Smalls interception return to the Gate City 30, R.J. Bourne scored Bluefield’s fifth touchdown of the half on a 15-yard quarterback draw.

Late in the half, Gate City halfback Caleb Herron took advantage of a gaping hole over the left side and out-ran the Beaver defense on a 94-yard touchdown sprint, cutting Bluefield’s lead to 35-7.

The Beavers, in a hurry up offense, went 80 yards in 1:31 as Bourne connected with Brandon Lilly on a 17-yard scoring aerial just before the half.

On Bluefield’s first third quarter possession, Stewart chalked up his third lengthy scoring run, finding the end zone from 45 yards away, and the Beavers led 49-7 with 9:25 left in the period.

At the request of the Gate City coaches, the clock was permitted to continuously for the remainder of the game.

Bluefield running backs Justin Masterson and Christian Oster scored on three yard runs to push the Beavers’ lead to a game-concluding 61-7 count.

Bluefield (2-1) travels to Greenbrier East next Friday.

Stewart led all rushers with 154 yards and three touchdowns, while Edwards accounted for 105 of total offense. Coppola ran for 60 and Bourne passed and ran for a touchdown.
