Roundup: Lady Mavs post shutout; Panthers clobber Bobcats

Generals romp; Princeton, Graham tennis teams win

LINDSIDE — Laine Shiflet drove in three runs and smacked a home run on a 2-for-3 afternoon and two pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the fourth-ranked James Monroe Lady Mavericks took a 5-0 softball win from PikeView on Monday in Monroe County.

Rebecca Ratliff pitched the first five innings for James Monroe, giving up one hit and striking out six batters. Bailee Jackson also gave up just one hit, plus a walk, in two innings. The Lady Mavs’ Megan Bailey batted 2 for 2 and drove in two runs.

PikeView’s hits came from Audrey Higgins and Kristen Worrell. Panthers pitcher Samantha Meadows struck out three, walked two, and gave up four earned runs and eight hits.

James Monroe hosts Bluefield today.

PikeView 14, Summers County 6

GARDNER — The PikeView Panthers, just returned from tournament play in South Carolina, pounded out 20 hits on a sunny day at Ritchie Field and ran away from Summers County.

Kevin Cottle was 4 for 5 with a pair of triples and a double for PikeView (6-5). He drove in three runs. John Clark was 4 for 4 with two RBIs. Ryan Roberts went 3 for 4 and Cordell was 3 for 5 at bat.

Ta-Ron Ayers was 3 for 4 and scored twice for the Bobcats.

PikeView, which lost its four games last week, plays today at Shady Spring.

HICO — Montcalm’s Seth Roberts two hits were a three-run homer and a triple as he set the pace for the Generals.

Josh Clower was 3 for 3 at bat, and struck out five Patriots in picking up the pitching win in relief of Steven Whitteker, who left the mound after a first-inning injury. Aaron Presley hit a triple on a 1-for-2 day. Dustin Williams was 2 for 3 and Tyler Poe was 2 for 2.

Brewer and Dickerson batted 2 for 3 for the Patriots.

Montcalm (3-2) hosts Bland County at 5 p.m. today at Coopers Field.

Princeton beats Richlands

PRINCETON — The Princeton girls swept doubles en route to a narrow 5-4 win over Richlands, while the boys from Princeton rolled to a 9-0 victory. Both Princeton teams are now 3-3 and play today at Bluefield.

In girls singles, Mirandi Basconi took a 9-7 decision and Kelsi Browning prevailed 8-4 to keep Princeton on top. For Richlands, Amber Street won 8-1 in singles, and she and Carly Dye battled Basconi and Emily Hendricks before Princeton took an 8-5 doubles win.

The Princeton boys’ day included singles shutouts by Adam Anderson and Hunter Alford. Anderson and Ryan French combined for an 8-0 doubles win.

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Graham kept its perfect streak in boys tennis going by shutting out the Spartans Monday at Bluefield College. Conner Wilson, David Figueroa and Dakota Miller posted 8-0 singles wins for the G-Men (4-0), who return to BC today to play Richlands at 4:30 p.m.
