DANVILLE, Va. —
The Bluefield Blue Jays took their winning show on the road Saturday night, and outslugged the Danville Braves to take an 11-3 win at Dan Daniel Park in front of a crowd announced as 1,102.
New Bluefield pitcher Joe Lovecchio earned the win with three innings of relief in which he did not allow a hit or a run and struck out four Braves. Adaric Kelly followed by pitching two innings of one-hit ball.
D.J. Davis drove in four runs for Bluefield, going 2 for 5 at the plate. Mitch Nay was 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs for Bluefield, which pounded out 13 hits. Matt Dean was also 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Jorge Saez hit his first Appalachian League home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning.
The first Danville batter of the game, Mikey Reynolds, hit a home run over the left-field fence off Bluefield starter Brady Dragmire. Alejandro Piloto also had a solo home run off Dragmire in the third. But that was the sum total of the Braves’ run scoring.
The Blue Jays teed off on Danville pitcher Steve Janas, touching the starter for six hits and drawing two walks. Janas was done in the third, after yielding a leadoff triple to Derrick Loveless and a run-scoring double to Dean — his third two-bagger of the season.
Davis’s eighth-inning triple brought three runs across the plate. He added an RBI single in the ninth for Bluefield’s final score.
Janas, the first of four Danville batters, took the loss.
Leading hitters for the Braves were Reynolds, who was 2 for 5, and Justin Black, with a 2 for 4 night.
The Danville series continues today with a 4 p.m. first pitch. Monday’s series finale is set for 7 p.m. The Appalachian League is idle on Tuesday.
