Honaker runs past Cobras in double-dip

COUNCIL, Va. — The Honaker Tigers kept pace in the Black Diamond District Friday night, winning their ninth in a row by defeating Council 64-47 at the Cobra Den.

With the win the Tigers set up a showdown with Haysi next week. Both teams are undefeated in BDD play. The two teams will play at Haysi on Tuesday and at Honaker on Friday with the district title on the line.

Honaker (17-2, 8-0) used full-court pressure and an up tempo offense to get off to a quick start. The tenacious defense resulted in 17 Council turnovers in the first half and numerous easy buckets. The Tigers held a 36-23 halftime lead.

“We came out with a lot of defensive intensity and made Council play our type of ballgame,” said Honaker coach Marcus Dunham. “We got the ball up and down the floor. We played aggressive on both ends of the floor.”

Honaker made only 36 percent of their shots, going 27-of-75 from the floor. But they dominated the glass, getting several second and third attempts. Tanner Robinette grabbed 13 rebounds and Payton Ball had 10 rebounds and four steals.

“We emphasized getting inside and getting on the boards hard,” Dunham said. “We had a good rebounding edge.”

Point guard Ty Hall led the offense with 15 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Casey Dye added 11 points.

Josh Viers fired in 15 points for the Cobras and Cameron Presley contributed 13 points in the loss.
