COUNCIL, Va. — After keeping it close to the vest in 10 of its first 11 games Council gave itself a little breathing room early in this one.

The Cobras improved to 2-0 in the Black Diamond District with a 62-53 win over Buchanan County rival Grundy Tuesday night at Council Elementary School.

Council (6-6) held Grundy without a field goal for nearly 11 minutes, including the entire second quarter when a 15-1 run broke a 16-16 tie. That gave the Cobras a lead that stayed in double figures until Grundy ended the game on a 13-0 run.

“I think our kids answered the bell there in the second quarter and took a big step forward in this game,” Council coach Patrick Wade. “I thought we played well on both ends of the floor against a Grundy team that plays hard and is very well-coached.”

Four players scored in double figures for Council, which forced 23 turnovers, mostly in Grundy's froncourt.

Josh Viers scored 15 points, Cameron Presley added 12 and Justin Mathis and Keeton Bostic each scored 10 points for the Cobras, who got two 3-pointers from Viers to open the second half.

It sparked an 8-0 run that gave Council a 39-17 lead. Viers steal and lay-up gave his club their biggest lead, 46-21, with 3:15 remaining in the third period.

Through three quarters Council shot an even 50 percent (18-of-36) thanks to a slew of lay-ups. Meanwhile the Golden Wave (0-10, 0-2) missed 13 shots in a row at one point.

“We might as well not be out there on defense, we give up so many layups,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ratliff said. “We don’t play well defensively, and we only have two scoring options. We need someone to step up and at least give us a third option offensively.”

Charles McCoy posted a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds for Grundy, both of them game-highs, and had four blocks. Dylan Billiter added 17 points and Jordan McCoy had four assists.

Viers doled out six assists, while Mathis and Lucas Barton each had four for Council.
