Roundup: Graham beats Auburn

MAX MEADOWS, Va. — The Graham G-Men held on down the stretch and beat Auburn 56-53 on Saturday evening in the fifth-place game of the First Bank of Virginia Christmas Tournament at Fort Chiswell High School.

Tony Hood and Spencer Sheets each dropped in 17 points for Graham (7-3), which took its second three-point win in two nights at the tourney.

Hood had four assists while Sheets had  five rebounds and four steals. Colby Hill added 12 points and seven rebounds. For Auburn, Jacob Shelburne tossed in 15 points.

In Saturday’s other tournament games, Grayson County beat George Wythe 64-51, Floyd County topped Fort Chiswell 94-85 and Carroll County defeated Radford 68-58.

Graham plays Friday at Galax in its first district game of the season.

PILGRIM’S KNOB, Va. — Ben Brown had 13 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Blue Tornado to its first win of the season at the Consol Energy Coalfield Clash Tournament Saturday, beating Rural Retreat by 40 in the consolation game.

Kyle Call had 13 points and seven steals for Richlands (1-4). Zach Johnson had 10 points and nine boards and Gabe Hunsaker had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Richlands junior varsity team won the JV championship over Virginia High.

In Thursday’s tournament action, Haysi defeated Richlands 62-33. The Tigers got 17 points from Tyler Tipton, 14 from Hunter Sutherland and 11 from Peyton O’Quinn. For the Blues, Ben Brown had 11 points and Trent Davis had eight.

Richlands is on the road in Bland County on Wednesday and hosts Marion on Friday.

CHAPMANVILLE — The Panthers gave their hosts quite a battle in the championship game of the Bob Runyon Memorial Tournament on Saturday. PikeView (1-3) trailed by a single point after the first quarter and the score was tied 30-30 at halftime.

For PikeView, Jason Weitzel made four treys and scored 22 points; Tanner Farley had 10 points. Zach Meadows had nine points and nine rebounds, and Bradley Flinchum generated three steals. Chapmanville (3-3) got 27 points from Kenny Plumley.

Panthers named to the all-tournament team were Weitzel, Logan McKinney and Meadows.

PikeView returns to action Wednesday at Shady Spring to play Liberty-Raleigh in a weather-delayed tournament.

CHAPMANVILLE — The Golden Knights ended 2012 with their third victory in four games, capturing third place in the Bob Runyon Memorial Tournament with a 30-point rout of the Hillbillies.

Mount View (3-1) limited their Logan County foes to five points in the first quarter and the Knights led 34-18 by halftime.

Maurice Brown and Antoine Calloway paced the Knights with 16 and 15 points respectively. Jake Akers led Man (1-4) with 14 and Chris Justice had 11.

The Knights travel to Montcalm on Wednesday.

CHARLESTON — Three Bobcats reached double figures but Summers County absorbed its second loss of the season on Saturday. For the visitors, T.J. Smith had 20 points, Ta’Ron Ayers had 16 and Josh Graham had 12.

Charleston Catholic’s top scorer was Nick George with 18.

The Bobcats host James Monroe on Wednesday.

DELBARTON — Despite Chelsey Dobbs’ 21 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and six steals, River View took a road loss in Mingo County on Saturday.

The Miners (3-5) pulled out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and led 31-14 at halftime. Chrissy Farmer led Mingo Central with 14 points.

For the Raiders (1-6), Phyllis Waldron had nine points and 11 rebounds. and Rebeckah Christian grabbed five rebounds and seven steals.

River View hosts PikeView on Friday.

CHARLESTON — The Lady Bobcats withstood nine three-point goals by the Irish to win for the sixth time in seven games on Saturday.

Brandy Morrison and Shelby Smith reached double-figure scoring for Summers County with 16 and 10 points respectively.

Charleston Catholic got 21 points from Samantha Fletcher, who hit five treys. Anna Whelan added 18 points.

Summers County hosts Bluefield on Wednesday.

SUMMERSVILLE — Lyndsey Hatfield scored 13 points for the Panthers in a losing cause on Friday night. The Grizzlies held the Panthers to five points or less in the first two quarters, though PikeView (2-4) outscored their hosts in the last two frmes.

Shealyn Shafer was the game’s top scorer with 18 points for Nicholas County.
