Prep hoops roundup: Floyd cans 16 3s to stop G-Men

FORT CHISWELL, Va. — The 3s were falling for the Buffaloes.

Caleb Tanner scored 37 points, canning eight of Floyd County’s 16 3s, leading the Buffaloes to an 88-74 win over Graham in the opening round of the First Bank of Virginia Christmas Tournament on Thursday night at Fort Chiswell High School.

Floyd County outscored Graham 52-33 in the second half, with Preston Neukirch canning four 3s for 14 points, while Cliff Conley scored nine points, all on 3s.

Graham connected on five 3s, including two apiece from Tony Hood, who had 26 points, and Spencer Sheets, who finished with 22. Zach Proffitt added 11 points and four rebounds, while Colby Hill tallied eight points and six boards.

Hood led the G-Men with nine rebounds.

Floyd County improved to 8-1, having scored at least 65 points in all nine games, and 71 in eight contests, including seven in winning efforts.

Graham (5-3) will play either Radford or Grayson County in a loser’s bracket game today at 4 p.m.

Nicholas County 77, River View 53

SUMMERSVILLE — The Nicholas County Grizzlies placed four players in double figures to roll past River View.

Jared Tharp led the Grizzlies with a game-high 19 points and Eric Peyatt scored 15. Zach Tolley added 12 and Cody McClung chipped in 10.

Jimmy Baker led River View with 14 points, while Taylor DeHaven and Tyree Baker added 11 apiece.

Nicholas County (2-2) travels to Clay County tonight. The Raiders host Bluefield on Wednesday.

Wyoming East 92, Point Pleasant 40

NEW RICHMOND — Brett Bowling scored 21 points to lead Wyoming East past Point Pleasant in the Warriors’ Family Health Care Classic.

Josh Tunstalle added 15 points and Tyler Lester had 11 for Wyoming East, which improved to 4-1.

Point Pleasant was paced by Dillon McCarty with 14 points and 12 first half points from Wade Martin.

Wyoming East will play East Fairmont tonight at 8 p.m. That will be preceded by Westside and Point Pleasant 6.

East Fairmont defeated Westside in the first game on Thursday.
