Black Diamond District teams continue at Bristol tournament

BRISTOL, Va. — The winner’s bracket semifinals are set for the Alpha Natural Resources Basketball Classic. Honaker will face Virginia High and Lebanon will battle Clintwood tonight.

At the Bearcat Den at Virginia High School on Thursday, Honaker continued to roll winning their third straight contest at the start of the season The Tigers were never tied and never trailed as they rolled by Eastside 73-42 in the quarterfinals.

“I’m really pleased with how we are progressing so far,” said Honaker coach Marcus Dunham.

“Tonight, it was a great team effort from all nine guys. Bottom line, we hustled and got after it and that was the tale of the tape.”

Ty Hall opened the game dropping in a 3-pointer from the top of the key and the Tigers never looked back. They led 17-8 after the first quarter and held a 37-19 advantage at halftime. Honaker outscored the Spartans in every quarter. Honaker was 27-of-48 from the floor making 56 percent of their shots.

“We want to emphasize going hard,” Dunham said. “We’re going to go hard from the opening tip to the final horn. But we still want to be under control and we’re getting our basketball legs under us.”

Payton Ball had another huge night with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Casey Dye had his best offensive output of the season with 17 points. Ty Hall added 13 points, six assists and four steals.  Casey Harman with seven rebounds, with two blocked shots and Tanner Robinette added six rebounds and six points.

“With these guys, they put the team first,” remarked Dunham. “They don’t care who scored the most points, they are just having a good time and winning basketball games.”

Eastside was led by Forrest Lunsford with 16 points.

“They outworked us the first quarter and in the first half,” Eastside coach Patrick Damron said.

“Honaker plays smart basketball and they run their fast break really well.

“They had 10 offensive rebounds in the first half to get some easy baskets.

“We couldn’t really get any stops on defense. Tonight was not a good night for us, I don’t know if it was us or if Honaker is just a really good team.”
