DANVILLE, Va. —
The Bluefield Blue Jays did not let a long rain delay distract them from winning their fifth straight game on Sunday, banging out a dozen hits in a 6-3 conquest of the Danville Braves.
Mitch Nay was 3 for 4 and drove in three runs for Bluefield (8-3), now two games ahead of the pack in the Appalachian League East. The Braves (3-7) have lost six straight.
The start of the game was delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain. D.J. Davis led off with a single for the Blue Jays, stole third base, and scored on a hit by Nay. Angel Rojas made the score 2-0 with his first Appalachian League home run in the second inning.
The Braves used five singles to take a 3-2 lead later in that inning, including a bases-loaded two-RBI hit by Seth Moranda and a liner to left by Mikey Reynolds.
Bluefield generated four straight hits in the fifth off reliever Matt Marksberry, leading to three more runs. Collecting RBIs were Dawel Lugo, Nay and Garrett Custons.
Davis and Nay replayed their first-inning connection in the sixth. After Davis tripled, Nay brought him home with a single to right for the game’s final run.
Blue Jays relievers Brett Barber and Shane Dawson got the win and save, respectively. They combined to strike out 10 batters and did not allow a hit or run in the final six innings. It was the first professional win for Barber, a Hurricane resident.
The last game in the current series is slated for a 7 p.m. start this evening in Danville.
