KEEN MOUNTAIN, Va. —
The scoreboard stopped working in the second quarter, but that didn’t stop Grundy and Twin Valley from lighting it up on the field.
Trey Smith and Brady McClanahan each scored a pair of touchdowns as the Golden Wave shook off a slow start to earn a season-opening, 42-21 win at Buchanan County rival Twin Valley Friday night.
Charles McCoy completed six of nine passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, both to Smith as Grundy scored three times to take the lead for good in the second quarter.
Smith hauled five balls for 153 yards and McClanahan ran 21 times for 160 yards and two scores.
Cameron Barbetto scored two touchdowns for the Panthers, who took a 7-0 lead on a 15-yard run by the speedy Barbetto on his club’s first possession.
A 57-yard by McClanahan to set up his first TD, a 5-yard run, got Grundy out of a field position hole and opened up an aggressive Twin Valley defense just enough for Smith and McCoy to operate against.
“I think we just finally settled down and got rid of our first game jitters,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said.
“We started blocking and started getting our double teams going like we practiced all week.
“Twin Valley and coach Crigger got the momentum and the field position there early, we were fortunate to only be down one touchdown.”
Barbetto brought the Twin Valley half a packed crowd to their feet when he returned the second half kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.
Grundy answered quickly with a 56-yard pass from McCoy to Smith that eventually led to Baylen Dillow’s 2-yard TD run.
“Our kids were so excited about this first game, against a big rival at home and maybe we got too excited,” said Twin Valley coach Tommy Crigger. “I think we got tired too quick because of it. But you can’t give up three touchdowns in a quarter and expect to win.”
Shannon Adams led the Panthers with 132 yards rushing on 14 carries.
