Bluefield High School senior Evan Smith was overtaken by Alston Spears of Roane County and finished in second place at the WVSSAC Class AA state tournament at Oglebay Park Golf Course on Wednesday in Wheeling.
Smith followed up an opening round 78 with a 79 on the final day of the two-day event to finish one stroke behind Spears, who shot a 75 on Wednesday to finish with a 156. Smith had a two-day total of 157.
James Monroe’s Ike Judy finished in fifth place, firing a two-day total of 160, following a first round 82 with a 78.
The only other local player, John Casto of Montcalm, followed a 97 with a 92 on Wednesday to finish with a 189 in the Class A competition.
Roane County won the Class AA team title with a 489, followed by Poca (492), which was paced by Travis Covert with a 158. Wyoming East placed seventh, led by Hunter Justus (184).
Class AAA honors went to University (453), followed by Wheeling Park (459), which was paced by Cole Hand with tourney winning 146.
Charleston Catholic claimed Class A honors with a 21-stroke lead over Madonna. Cory Hoshor of Buffalo was the medalist with a 154.
