Graham doubles duo falls to Gate City

ROANOKE, Va. — The season came to an end for the Graham girls tennis team, as the doubles duo of Caitlin Williams and Rebecca Day dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the Group A state doubles semifinals on Friday at the N-Door Tennis.

Williams and Day lost to Gate City’s Rosa Smith and Emily Smith, the G-Girls’ second loss to the Blue Devils’ doubles team this season.

Gate City will play Kynadi Mauney and Carrinton Mauney of George Mason in the Group A finals today at Radford University at noon.

Mauney-Carrinton defeated Abby Goszka and Lori Gagnon of Rappahannock 6-0, 6-2.

Williams also competed in the Group A singles tournament on Thursday at Virginia Tech, dropping a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Mariam Salakaia. The George Mason freshman captured the singles crown over Rosa Smith of Gate City.

Graham narrowly missed also making a Group A team tennis appearance, losing to Radford 5-4 in a seven-hour plus match in the Region C finals.

Graham returns all six of its top-seeded players for the 2014 season.
