Honaker, Grundy set for Black Diamond showdown

GRUNDY, Va. — Haysi got in its final Black Diamond District tune-up last week. Now it’s Honaker’s turn.

Unless Grundy can upset the Tigers tonight the 2012 BDD title will come down to the same two teams that have won the last 19 crowns, Honaker and Haysi.

Haysi put itself in position to play for the BDD championship with last week’s win over Hurley. Honaker (7-1, 2-0 in BDD play) can do the same this evening as it travels to play the Golden Wave (3-5, 2-1) in this, the next-to-last week of the regular season in Virginia.

The other BDD clubs are involved in non-district games tonight. Haysi (6-2, 3-0) hosts winless Phelps, Ky. (0-8); Hurley (4-4, 0-3) plays at Rye Cove (2-6) and Twin Valley (1-7, 0-3) hosts Castlewood (5-3).

Honaker, which hosts Haysi Nov. 3, is coming off a week in which it knocked off previously unbeaten John Battle and took over the top spot in the Group A, Division 1, Western Section playoff rankings.

“Beating (John Battle) was really huge,” said Honaker coach Doug Hubbard, whose club has a shot at playing at home all the way through the state semifinals if it wins out. “Now we’ve got to take care of business the rest of the season and we’ll really be in good shape.”

The Tigers face a Grundy team coming off a 54-0 spanking at the hands of defending Division 1 state champion Clintwood. The undersized Golden Wave face a similar challenge tonight in Honaker.

“Honaker is another team that can line up and run right at you, but they also have a very talented quarterback who can take off running or put it in the air,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said.

“We’re down in size compared to times in the past and we don’t match up size-wise with the majority of our opponents.

“We have to have guys in the right position to make the plays. We have take advantage of what we have and concentrate on the positives.”

With two games remaining Honaker, Haysi and Hurley are in good shape as far as making the playoffs. Grundy and Twin Valley each need another win or two.
