Concord University led by 10 points midway through the first half of the opening game of the 2013 Currence Classic on Friday night at Bluefield State College, only to fall to Chowan University 76-74 when the Hawks’ Tiron Brown drove for a game-winning layup with three seconds left.
Chowan’s 6-0 run over the game’s final two minutes at the Ned Shott Gymnasium ended with Brown’s bucket.
Ashante Ross and Phoenix Butler-Poole both scored 19 points to pace Chowan.
Mike Boyd scored a game-high 20 points for Concord (3-3) on 6-of-8 shooting from the field including a 4-for-5 performance from three-point range. Boyd also had a team-high four assists and went 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Freshman B.J. Hamlet poured in 15 points in 26 minutes. Nick Moyer chipped in seven points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals as well.
As a team, Chowan made 51.9 percent of its field-goal tries and Concord shot 54.2 percent from the field and 8-for-17 from three-point territory.
It was CU’s second buzzer-beater loss of the year; Concord also was defeated on a last-second shot against Winston-Salem State earlier in the year.
Davis & Elkins beat Bluefield State 86-75 in the second game on Friday night. Shakir Dunning tossed in 31 points and had four rebounds for the Big Blues; Sam Ouedraogo had eight points and 10 rebounds. Joseph Dawkins handed out eight assists and made three steals.
Devin Miller led the Senators of D&E with 25 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Concord will take on Davis & Elkins at 4 p.m. today to begin the final day of the Currence Classic. Host Bluefield State plays Chowan in the finale.
