The season ended for the Concord University volleyball team Monday night when West Virginia State defeated the Mountain Lions, 3-1, in the first round of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
Concord (15-19) dropped the first set 25-14, before coming back to take the second set 25-20. However, the Yellow Jackets took the final two sets 25-14 and 27-25.
Sophomore outside hitter Brytni Willis recorded her third double-double in four matches with a 10-kill, 10-dig effort to lead Concord.
Freshman middle hitter Kylie Perdue added eight kills and tied for a match-high five blocks while sophomore middle hitter Sarah Jones chipped in seven kills, five blocks and 12 digs.
Rounding out CU’s attack leaders were sophomore middle hitter Jasmin Sutherland and junior outside hitter Rebecca Lovejoy with eight and five kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter Amanda Walker passed along 21 assists while serving two assists. Fellow setter Nikki McMillan added 12 assists and two aces of her own. Sophomore libero Lindsey Smith tallied a team-high 22 digs.
The Mountain Lions and Yellow Jackets were tied at 11-11 in the first set before State went on a 7-0 run en route to the 25-14 opening-set victory.
The second set was another close contest with both teams trading points until the frame was tied at 15-15. Concord proceeded to take the set, and tie the match, with a 25-20 win thanks in part to two kills each in the final 10 points by Sutherland and Perdue.
The Mountain Lions trailed 10-3 in the fourth set before a valiant comeback effort that saw the Maroon and Gray erase its deficit and tie the match at 20-20 and eventually take a 24-23 lead before the Yellow Jackets were able to claim four of the set’s final five points, capping the victory.
Concord will return 17 players from this year’s team in 2013.
