HONAKER, Va. —
It took six days and a super-storm to finally get it all in but it was worth the wait for the home team.
Honaker won the final two sets to hold off Honaker for a 3-1 win in the championship finals of the Black Diamond District volleyball tournament.
Twin Valley swept Grundy 3-0 in the consolation contest Saturday at A.P. Baldwin Gymnasium.
Meghan Hess and Laura Hess combined for 24 kills and Emily Kendrick added 10 as Honaker won, 25-21, 14-25, 25-10 and 25-21.
Meghan Hess had 13 kills, including several in the deciding fourth game. She also contributed a pair of blocks.
“They weren’t blocking Meghan so we started feeding her in the middle,” Honaker coach Amy Davidson said. “She’s been strong all year and she’s come so far.”
Honaker’s depth at the net offset a 22-kill, 6-block effort from Haysi’s Erin Hyden. Angel Bryant added 11 kills for Haysi, while Kendrick added 11 service points and eight assists.
Sophomore Alexis Ramsey had 19 kills and three blocks to lead Twin Valley to a 27-25, 25-22, 25-18 win over Grundy for third place in the BDD.
“If Alexis gets good sets she can capitalize on them,” Twin Valley coach Melisa Goodman said.
“We just didn’t do a good job in several other areas.”
Kaitlyn Rife, Dana Snead and Candace Fletcher combined for 16 kills, while Rife and Fletcher combined for 26 digs for Grundy. Fletcher added 14 service points while Krystal Cantrell contributed 18 assists for the Lady Wave.
Honaker, Haysi and Twin Valley will host first round matches while Grundy opens on the road in this coming week’s Region D tournaments.
Pairings will be finalized today.
