River View's Dobbs going to Bluefield State

BRADSHAW — When the fall semester rolls around, Bluefield State College will be getting two athletes in one from River View High School.

Recently graduated, Chelsey Dobbs signed Tuesday to play softball and volleyball for the Lady Big Blues next year.

Probably known more for her skills on the basketball court than the softball field, or the volleyball court, Dobbs reluctantly decided to forgo that sport, at least in her freshman year at BSC.

Chelsey plans to pursue a degree in nursing, with her ultimate goal to become a nurse anesthetist.

The last of the students from the former Iaeger High School to now graduate from River View, Dobbs said sadly upon finishing her three years at River View, “I don’t want to leave.”

Looking back at her volleyball experience, she remarked, “We had three different coaches in three years.”

Katie Larsen, the head coach her senior season, is a favorite of the students and has become a close friend of Dobbs. Larsen also served as an assistant coach in girls’ basketball and softball.

Chelsey spoke fondly of the friendship and guidance Larsen has given her this past season at River View.

She related, “At first, I didn’t enjoy playing volleyball that well.  I always loved softball, but I have grown to enjoy them equally.”

In softball, Dobbs was a sure-handed third baseman, with a strong arm and a threat anytime she stepped into the batter’s box.

Although a knee injury slowed Dobbs in basketball as a senior, she still managed to eclipse 1,000 rebounds in her career, as well as launching a 58 foot buzzer-beater that snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Mountain Mission, VA.

She was selected as the Bluefield Daily Telegraph basketball Player of the Week as both a junior and a senior, while making the All-Class AA All-State third team in the eleventh grade and being named special honorable mention this past season.

The soundness of the Nursing program at BSC, along with the close proximity to her home in Jolo were two of the reasons Dobbs chose to continue her education and athletic careers at Bluefield State.

Chelsey is the daughter of Jerry and Mary Kelly Dobbs.
