Kentucky Christian topples Bluefield

GRAYSON, Ky. — Just as Bluefield College did in its opening football game, the Rams kept the score close in the first half but lost to Mid-South Conference opponent Kentucky Christian 33-14 on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights’ D’Andre Coleman returned a blocked punt 66 yards to open the scoring, and Marcus Hicks caught a pass from Graham Johnston as the home squad took a 14-0 lead.

Cory Mabry passed 11 yards to Michael Nesmith for Bluefield’s first score with 12 seconds left in the first half, producing a 14-7 halftime score.

In the game’s final two minutes, the Rams reeled off a 12-play, 67-yard drive that ended with Marion Harris scoring from six yards out. Mikel Hawks’ second point-after kick of the day yielded the final point of the day.

Bluefield (0-3) held the ball almost 13 minutes more than Kentucky Christian (2-0) and racked up 189 offensive yards to the Knights’ 256.

Rams quarterback Greg Hampton was 5 for 16 with three interceptions, while Mabry was 10 for 25 and was intercepted once. Josh Wells led BC rushers with 56 net yards on 14 attempts.

Daniel Griffin punted nine times for Bluefield, with a 32.2 yard average.

Johnston ran for a 1-yard touchdown in addition to his scoring pass. He gained 67 yards rushing on 10 attempts, and was 10 for 27 passing for 141 yards. He also got off a 35-yard punt.

Bluefield’s Anthony Rivers picked off two of Johnston’s passes. Bobby Freeman got BC’s only sack, and he also recovered a fumble, returning it 19 yards.

Tarrell Starckey forced a fumble and recovered it in the first quarter. He led the Rams with five solo tackles and five assists, including 2 1/2 tackles for loss, and he also broke up a pass.

Bluefield will take on another Mid-South Conference school, Faulkner University of Montgomery, Ala., this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Stadium. Faulkner lost 34-20 at Georgetown College on Saturday.
