BLUEFIELD — PikeView Lady Panthers midfielder Brooke Baker (left), goalkeeper Kristen Brinkley and defender Shyann Carr were all named to Class AA-A All-State second team by the West Virginia Sportswriters Association. PikView’s Kassic Catron, Sophie Klein and Lexi O’Dell received honorable mention. PikeView advanced to state tournament play this season before falling in the semifinals in overtime to Bridgeport.
Concord University volleyball middle hitter Sarah Jones (left) and outside hitter Brytni Willis (below) earned All-Mountain East Conference recognition for their play during the 2013 regular season. Jones earned second team All-MEC honors while Willis received honorable mention all-league accolades. Jones compiled 300 kills, a .216 attack percentage, 92 blocks (17 solo / 75 assisted), 251 digs (2.30 per set) and 15 aces. Willis registered 292 kills, 40 blocks (3 solo / 37 assisted), 293 digs and 31 aces. For the season, Willis has produced six double-doubles and at least 10 kills in a match on 14 occasions.
Bluefield College defensive back Frank Brooks (left) has been named as a second team All Mid-South Conference East Division honoree. Caleb Frye and Matthew Raner also earned MSC recognition, earning Academic All-MSC honors. To be recognized, the student-athlete must have achieved at least a sophomore status and hold a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.25 or higher.
Brooks led the Rams’ defensive effort this season, making a team high 77 tackles (52 solo/25 ast.).
His season high and career high-tying effort of 13 tackles came in the Rams’ Nov. 9 game at Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). The Virginia Beach, Va., native also tallied a team high four interceptions in 2013, including two in BC’s season opener at Point on Aug. 31.
