CU women fall to Cardinals

WHEELING — The Concord University women’s basketball team recorded a season-high 12 steals and forced 29 turnovers, but made 37.7 percent of their shots from the floor in a 70-55 loss to Wheeling Jesuit on Monday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions (4-5, 2-4 Mountain East) trailed most of the game, cutting a 27-point deficit to 10 with 5:34 left.

The Cardinals (5-5, 2-4) shot 46 percent from the field and were 21 of 29 at the foul line while Concord made 8 of 14. Taneka Lewis topped WJU in scoring with 12 points and added four assists.

Concord got five rebounds and a game-high 24 points from Andrea Bertrand, on 10 of 16 shooting. Bertrand has scored 20 or more points in three of CU’s last four games.

The new Mountain East Conference player of the week, Sissy Wagner, contributed 13 points, three assists and four steals. Rachel Artrip and Sammi Webster each added seven points for CU with Artrip adding a pair of steals.

Concord’s bench went 0 for 11 from the field. As a team, CU was 1 for 18 from three-point range.

The men’s game was still in progress at press time.

Concord hosts Charleston Thursday evening.
