Roundup: Bears sweep; Bobcats rip Tigers

BLAND, Va. — Bland County’s girls basketball team wrapped up its pre-Christmas schedule Saturday night with a 55-44 win over Northwood at Bland High School.

The Lady Bears (7-2) allowed 11 or fewer points in three quarters, and caught fire in the second period for a 31-21 halftime lead.

Laurel Hankins and Kirby Mustard led the winners with 22 and 11 points respectively; Sam Magyar was top rebounder, with 12. Mustard made three 3-point goals.

Kendra Nutter and Chelsea Cardwell of Northwood combined for 31 points.

The Bland County JV teams won both the girls’ and boys’ contests Saturday. The Lady Bears next play on Dec. 30 at Tazewell.

HINTON — Four Lady Bobcats reached double-figure scoring in Saturday’s victory, led by Emily Blevins’ 18 points. Hallie Gunnoe had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six steals. Leslie Mack also had 16 points and Ashley Brown added 15.

Emily Daniel had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers, and Lydia Honaker added 11 points.

Lady Bobcats travel to Midland Trail for a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

BLAND, Va. — Kyle Kennedy hit five three-pointers and amassed 25 points, and his brother Kris had three treys and 19 points to lead the Bears to a 10-point win. Josh Shrader hauled down eight rebounds. Jacob Lambert scored 10 for Bland County, which led 24-23 at halftime.

Northwood got 17 points each from Jeremiah Thompson and Dalton Combs; and Van Crawford added 12.

The Bears host Rural Retreat at Rocky Gap on Monday.

Gilbert 73, Big Creek 49

GILBERT — Aaron Birchfield sank seven of Gilbert’s 11 three-point goals, scoring 29 for the Lions on Friday night. Big Creek’s Austin Johnson almost matched his effort, with 24 points and four treys.

The Owls (1-3) stayed close in the first and third quarters but were outscored 22-9 in the final eight minutes.

“We just didn’t play as a team,” said Big Creek coach Phil Dunford.

Big Creek’s next action is Dec. 29-30 in the annual John Sparks Tourmament at Iaeger.

Gilbert won the JV game 57-30.
