Herd thunders to 3-0 start

Associated Press

HUNTINGTON (AP) — Tirrell Baines had a career high for Marshall with 16 points to lead the Thundering Herd past the Boston University Terriers 70-47 Sunday afternoon.

Markel Humphrey added 14 points for Marshall (3-0) and Mark Dorris hit double figures with 11 to help give the Thundering Herd its first 3-0 start since 1999-00.

Marshall had no trouble holding off Boston (1-4) after leading by 16 at the half as the Thundering Herd led by as many as 25 in the second half. The Terriers got no closer than 12.

As a team, Marshall shot 50 percent from the field and had eight more rebounds than Boston (32-24). Marshall scored 22 points off 19 Boston turnovers.

After trading baskets in the opening minutes of the first half, Marshall ended on an 18-5 run with the help of 14 Boston turnovers to lead 38-22 at halftime.

Scott Brittain scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the second half for Boston. John Holland was the only other Boston player to reach double digits in scoring with 11.

Corey Lowe, Boston’s leading scorer coming into the game, did not make the trip to the contest because of personal reasons. It is the fourth straight loss for Boston.
