CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Mike Scott scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Sylven Landesberg added 14 points to lead Virginia to a 76-55 win over Oral Roberts in the final states-side game of the Cancun Challenge on Saturday.

On Tuesday in Cancun, Mexico, Virginia (3-1) plays Stanford. Oral Roberts (2-2) takes on Sam Houston State.

Midway through the second half, Virginia, which led by six at halftime, pulled away with an 11-4 run. Assane Sene, who was suspended for the Cavaliers first three games, scored five points during the spurt.

Sene, a 7-footer, finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Back-to-back baskets by Sene and Landesberg gave Virginia a 59-42 lead. Will Sherrill’s 3-pointer gave the Cavaliers a 20-point advantage.

Kevin Ford led Oral Roberts with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Virginia held the Golden Eagles to 32-percent shooting.

In the first half, Oral Roberts came out smoking from 3-point range. Guard Kyron Stokes hit his first four attempts from behind the arc as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 19-14 lead.But Virginia, behind 13 first-half points from Mustapha Farrakhan, pulled back into the game and eventually led by as many as 10. The Cavaliers took a 41-35 lead into the break.

During the first half, Oral Roberts guard Roderick Pearson had to leave the game with what appeared to be a knee injury. He did not return.



Lincoln Memorial 92, Concord 66



HARROGATE, Tenn. — Rafee Smith scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but Concord dropped a 92-66 decision to Lincoln Memorial in the DeBusk/Burchett Holiday Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Concord also lost to Carson-Newman on Friday in the same event, dropping to 0-3 on the season.

Lincoln Memorial, which defeated Hiwassee by 81 points — 143-62 — on Friday, were led against Concord by Wally Jones, who scored 27 points.

Chance Smith added 11 points for the Mountain Lions, while committing no turnovers at the Concord point guard. Freshman Rick Alderman added seven points and 11 rebounds off the bench,

The Mountain Lions return to the court for a non-conference game against Mercer County rival Bluefield State on Friday night as part of the annual Currence Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm EST.



College Women

Marshall 57, Kent State 50



HUNTINGTON — Junior Tynikki Crook scored 13 points to go along with seven rebounds as the Marshall women's basketball team notched its first win of the season, taking down Kent State by a 57-50 margin Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall (1-2) trailed by six points, 33-27, at halftime, but came out strong in the second half, holding Kent State (2-1) to just 17 second-half points to rally for the win.

Chantelle Handy and Crook marked the lone double-digit scorers for the Herd with Crook tallying 13 and Handy scoring 11. Alyssa Hammond scored nine while junior Mystee Dale chipped in eight points while dishing out a game-high seven assists.

Hammond hit all three free throw attempts, extending her streak to 36 consecutive free throw makes, dating back to last season.

Marshall will take to the road for its next six games, beginning with a trip to Ohio University on Tuesday evening. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Convo.



Prep Boys Basketball

PCA wins 2 out of three



POWELL, Tenn. — Pipestem Christian began its 2009-2010 boys basketball season by winning two out of three games at a tournament played at Crown College.

Zach Worley and Austin Peyton scored 20 points apiece in PCA’s 65-48 win over South Haven Christian of Springfield, Tenn., on Saturday.

They also played the role of rude guests, defeating the host Temple Baptist Academy 66-28 on Friday. Peyton scored 17 points, while Aleks Lane added 11.

Pipestem lost the opener on Thursday, 73-61, to Shining Light Baptist from Monroe, N.C. Worley and Peyton had 20 points apiece.

Lane and Bret Lane led PCA in rebounds.

Pipestem Christian (2-1) will travel on Dec. 4 to play in a tournament at Teays Valley Christian.
