West Liberty tops Concord in season-ending shootout

WEST LIBERTY — West Virginia Conference champion West Liberty University defeated Concord 64-42 Saturday in the second-highest-scoring football game in league history.
The teams combined for 1,192 yards of offense, 64 first downs and 15 touchdowns.
The Hilltoppers (10-1), ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, got 377 yards passing from quarterback Zach Amedro, who threw for four scores. Kashif Walls and Ryan Travis each scored twice, and both went over 100 yards receiving.
Brian Kennedy ran for three touchdowns and 234 yards for Concord (6-5), and caught a TD pass. Thomas Mayo caught 11 passes for 102 yards and one score. Thomas Hearons was 19-for-32 passing for 195 yards, and Evin Dusold added 52 more passing yards.
West Liberty led 30-21 at the break but Concord closed to within 36-28 early in the third quarter after a 59-yard Kennedy rush. However, the Toppers scored the next four touchdowns, including receiving and rushing efforts by Eddie Hills, to put the game on ice.
Joe Greenway led the Mountain Lions’ defensive statistics with five solo tackles and four assists. Tyrell Lynch, in his final game, had a sack along with four solo tackles and two assists.
Jayson Keyser of West Liberty made nine solo tackles, had four assists, forced a fumble and broke up two passes.
The Hilltoppers finished 8-0 in conference play and kept the top spot in the NCAA Super Region 1. Concord’s six football wins are the most at the school since 1998.
Mayo and Amedro are both among 24 finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy, to be presented to the Division II football player of the year on Dec. 11.
Mayo had 100 yards or more receiving in seven of Concord’s 11 games and broke the school record for receiving yards.
Kennedy ended the season with 1,505 yards, 10th best in WVIAC history and second in Concord’s record book. The conference rushing leader became the 24th player in league history to run for 1,300 yards or more in a season.
