Giles wins six-overtime thriller

Staff reports
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

PEARISBURG, Va. — Gavin Lee’s 2-yard run in the sixth overtime capped a rally from a 23-point deficit Friday night as Giles scored a 46-43 nondistrict victory over Blacksburg.

The six overtimes tied a VHSL record set in 2002 by Brookville and Salem.

The game included nine field goals — six by Blacksburg’s Caleb Violette. Giles’ Cody Journell tied the game late in the fourth quarter with a 54-yard field goal, then he was wide on a 57-yarder in the final seconds of regulation.

Violette’s third field goal in overtime from 22 yards out put Blacksburg up 43-40.

Lee then scored on third down to give the Spartans their third straight win over the Bruins.

Blacksburg led 23-0 at halftime on three field goals by Violette, a 72-yard run by Latrell Keys and a 74-yard pass from Trey Gresh to Greg Keys.
