Mets outhit P-Rays

Staff report

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Wilmer Flores hit his sixth home run of the season and the Kingsport Mets beat the Princeton Rays 8-5 Wednesday night.

Flores’ solo shot came in the first inning off Princeton ace Joseph Cruz and was the defining moment of a 1-for-4 game.

Rafael Fernandez and Kyle Suire led the Mets, each getting two hits, scoring two runs and batting a run in. Suire also hit his first home run of the season, a solo effort in the seventh inning.

Kingsport starter Collin McHugh gave up four runs in five innings with four strikeouts. His replacement, Phillips Orta threw three innings without giving up a hit. Although he walked three and struck out two and did give up a run, Orta still got his first win of the campaign.

Michael Powers picked up his third save of the year after hurling a perfect ninth.

Princeton starter Joseph Cruz allowed four runs on five hits in four innings. He also struck out three and walked one.

His reliever, Juan Santana, did not fare much better. He also gave up four runs on five hits in 2 2-3 innings of work and took the loss to drop to 0-2 for the year.

No player had multiple hits for Princeton. Tim Beckham led the Rays with a 1-for-3 night that included a double and two RBIs.

Princeton (14-17) plays the second of their three-game series against Kingsport tonight. Their next home game is Aug. 2 against the Bluefield Orioles.
