Twins’ hitting tops Rays

Staff report

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — The Elizabethton Twins salvaged one game of their three-game series against Princeton on Thursday night, beating the Rays 8-5.

Several Twins got into the act offensively. Tobias Streich went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs. Michael Gonzales hit behind Streich and delivered a 2-for-4 game with two RBIs and his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Herbert Lara went 2-for-4 batting in the 9 hole, collecting one RBI.

Michael Gonzales and Chris Herrmann also contributed home runs to Elizabethton’s cause. Gonzales hit his fourth of the year, a two-run shot in the first inning, and Herrman delivered his fifth, a two-run shot in the seventh frame.

Jason Patton went 4-for-4 for Princeton and scored a run. But he was the only member of the Rays with multiple hits. Five other Rays registered a knock, but Cody Rogers was the only one with two RBIs. Julio Cedeno hit his third homer of the season, a solo effort with no outs in the third inning.

Princeton starter Trevor Shull was hit early and often, giving up five earned runs and five hits with four walks to three strikeouts. He took the loss and dropped to 2-1.

Elizabethton starter Martire Garcia also had his problems, allowing four earned runs and five hits. But he also struck out six while walking just one and got just enough run support for the win, improving to 4-0. Tony Davis threw the final four innings for Elizabethton to get the save.

Princeton (16-13) returns to Hunnicutt Field tonight for the first of a scheduled three-game series against the Johnson City Cardinals. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
